Minister of Defence and National Security Honorable Adam Shareef Umar Has Delivered His Statement In AMCDRR 2016, New Delhi, India


The seventh Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction began on 3rd November 2016. This is the first major inter-governmental event after the adoption of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. The conference will pave the way for implementation of the framework in the Asian region and will also devise a mechanism for monitoring its progress.

Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi inaugurated the Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction at Vigyan Bhawan Auditorium, New Delhi, India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi provided a forward looking 10 point guideline to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Minister of Defense and National Security Honorable Adam Shareef Umar, delivered his statement in Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction by stressing on the importance of robust action and innovative approaches to reduce disaster risks. Minister also highlighted the commitment of Maldives towards achieving the goals and targets of Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction, Sustainable Development Goals along with the Paris Agreement.

He also stated that “This conference is a milestone for us all, as we embark on achieving the vision of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the goals established by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Sendai Framework and the Sustainable Development Goals, along with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change are vital for the survival of the Maldives in the face of climate change and extreme disasters.”

“The correlation between climate change and extreme disasters is evident. Looking at the current trend, it is evident that we need holistic and innovative approaches to manage the risk of disaster. We need definite action at a global and regional level, to save vulnerable countries including the Maldives”.

Minister also highlighted on the importance of establishing cohesive DRR policies. He also called upon all the SAARC member countries to recognize the importance of this regional mechanism. The Maldives extends its commitment for this initiative, and will work towards fast tracking the institutionalization of the SAARC rapid response agreement.

Along with Minister of Defense and National Security Honorable Adam Shareef Umar, Deputy Minister Ms. Fathimath Thasneem also participated in the AMCDRR 2016.  Deputy Minister Thasneem chaired the session as the co-chair of Ministerial Statements session of AMCDRR 2016.

The Maldives acknowledges the efforts of the UNISDR in promoting and working towards implementing the Sendai Framework. The Maldives is fully committed to this cause. The New Delhi Declaration that will be endorsed during this conference will stand testimony to this commitment.

The AMCDRR conference will end on 05th November 2016.
